When ADHD Turns Into Survival Mode
The Scariest Part of ADHD Isn’t Laziness. It's the overwhelm, avoidance and emotional exhaustion slowly disconnected me from myself.
Helloo ADHD Brains!
Well long time no chat, I have been busy working on my new ADHD work with it system designed by adhd brains for adhd brains! I won’t lie I also have been stuck in ADHD survival mode for the last month.
Routines gone, confidence and self esteem at an all time low, I even at one point started to think about giving this whole thing up completely.
What is crazy is I don’t think I fully realised I was in survival mode until recently.
Like genuinely.
It didn’t happen all at once either, which is what makes it scary.
One minute I felt like I was doing okay.
Training consistently.
Working.
Trying to stay on top of life.
Then slowly…
things just started slipping.
The gym became:
“I’ll go tomorrow.”
Sleep got worse.
Avoidance got worse.
The little tasks started piling up.
Messages stayed unopened for days.
Bills became stressful to even think about.
I started spending more time escaping life than actually living it. like playing games for 8 hours + a day.
And the weirdest part?
I didn’t even realize how disconnected from myself I had become.
Survival mode happens slowly
I think that’s the dangerous part with ADHD.
You don’t usually wake up one day and suddenly become a mess.
It happens slowly.
A late night here.
Avoiding one task there.
One missed gym session.
One takeaway meal because you’re exhausted and well its the easy option.
Then suddenly weeks pass…
and all the routines that used to keep you grounded are gone.
You stop feeling like yourself but can’t fully explain why.
ADHD survival mode isn’t laziness
This part matters a lot to me.
Because when people look at someone in survival mode they usually just see:
lazy, unmotivated, undisciplined person but in reality its someone who is trying to just stay afloat and not drown.
Most ADHDers in survival mode are just completely overloaded.
Mentally.
Emotionally.
Financially.
Spiritually.
Your nervous system gets so overwhelmed that even basic things start feeling heavy.
Not because you don’t care.
Because your brain has been running on empty & stress for too long.
The scary part
ADHD survival mode feels temporary…
until months pass. Its like the days just keep blurring into one.
That line honestly hit me hard when I first thought about it.
Because the whole time you keep telling yourself:
“I’ll get it together next week.” or “I will start fresh tomorrow”
But then next week comes… tomorrow comes and you’re even more exhausted than before.
So you chase comfort instead.
Comfort becomes addictive
And honestly this is where I got stuck for a while.
Gaming. (8 hours a day)
Scrolling. (2-3 hours a day)
Isolation. (not seeing friends or even leaving my house)
Staying up too late.
Avoiding responsibilities.
Getting attached to things that helped me escape reality for a bit.
Not because I was lazy.
Because my brain wanted relief. It wanted comfort, because of how long i had been pushing myself on empty, treating myself like a machine.
That’s what survival mode really is a lot of the time.
Your brain desperately trying to feel okay again. To feel some sense of normality.
Shame keeps you trapped
Then comes the shame. Oh my favourite part!
You stop going to the gym because you feel behind.
You avoid finances because you know they’re stressing you out.
You stop replying to people because it’s been “too long now.”
You stop praying because you feel guilty for disappearing again.
And the longer you avoid things… the heavier returning feels. It’s pride and perfectionism disguising itself as protection.
Recovery starts smaller than you think
This is something I’m still learning myself.
Recovery doesn’t usually start with:
“changing your entire life overnight.”
Honestly it starts ridiculously small.
one walk? even something small like going to bed an hour earlier, we are not trying to change the world overnight.
Just small actionable steps, the ones we often overlook and think we are above.
That’s it.
That’s how people slowly come back to themselves.
Not through intensity.
Through small repeated acts of honesty and consistency.

Final Thoughts
One of the hardest things about ADHD survival mode is how normal it starts to feel.
You slowly stop doing the things that made you feel like you.
The gym, your routines, your faith, your confidence.
Then one day you look around and wonder where that version of you went.
Trust me you’re not broken, you’re overloaded.
And survival mode is not your identity.
You don’t need to fix your whole life this week.
Just take one small step back towards yourself.
Regardless be proud of yourself for showing up, its hard and some days i know it feels easier to give up, but i am so glad you didn’t.

Faith Anchor
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
Jesus doesn’t say:
“Get your life together first.”
He says:
“Come.”
Even exhausted.
Even overwhelmed.
Even after disappearing for a while.
You don’t need to become perfect before returning to God.
Question for You
What’s one thing survival mode slowly pulled you away from?
is the gym, or even your routines? Or is it things as simple as a bed time?
And what’s one small thing you could do this week to reconnect with yourself again?
Please drop it down below in the comments!
You’re probably not as alone in this feeling as you think.

Thank you Luke 🥰, one thing survival mode slowly pulled me away from was enjoying the simple things in life, I’ve been so focused on being productive etc.
