ADHD & Why Slowing Down Feels Impossible (and Why You Need It Anyway)

Hello ADHD Brains,

If you’ve ever felt guilty for resting… this one’s for you.

We live in a world that screams: move faster, do more, keep up. make more money and have a family, have a house and just go go go!

We are constantly being pushed to our limits, be it through social media and comparison or through our own impeccably high standards we set for ourselves.

And with ADHD?

That pressure gets multiplied x10.

It’s not just that we feel behind, it’s that we feel like we can never catch up.

So we push. We hustle. We try to "fix" our restlessness by adding more.

But here’s the truth:
Slowing down isn’t failure. It’s faith.


🧠 Why Slowing Down Feels Wrong for ADHD Brains

  • ADHD often makes us seek stimulation even when we’re exhausted.

  • Rest can feel unsafe — like we’re falling behind, missing out, or wasting time.

  • Stillness gives space for uncomfortable thoughts to surface… so we avoid it.

But what if we’ve misunderstood rest?


✝️ The Biblical Truth About Rest (Even If You’re Not Religious)

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

Jesus invites us to slow down.

Not when we’ve earned it.

Not when the to-do list is done.

Now.

He withdrew from the crowds often.
He napped during storms.
He moved
with the Father, not ahead of Him.

Rest isn’t just a break from doing.
It’s a return to being.

From the very beginning, rest was part of the design.
In Genesis, God creates for six days—and on the seventh, He rests.

Not because He’s tired, but to model something for us:

"Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done." – Genesis 2:3

That wasn’t just about productivity.
It was about rhythm. Wholeness. Trust.

Living with ADHD can feel like trying to sprint through quicksand — the harder you try to push forward, the more stuck you feel.

And because we struggle to pause, we can confuse stillness with laziness. But they’re not the same.

Stillness is strength.
It’s an act of courage to stop, breathe, and say: “I don’t need to carry it all.”

Even if you don’t believe in God, your body, your nervous system, your mind—they crave rest.
Not just sleep, but deep rest:

  • Mental rest (less pressure)

  • Emotional rest (less guilt)

  • Soul rest (less striving)

As a Christian, I believe that rest ultimately points us to something greater—
That we were never created to be our own saviors or solutions.

But no matter what you believe, I hope this gives you permission to pause without shame.

Not because you earned it. But because you need it.


😔 But I Still Feel Guilty When I Stop…

Me too sometimes.

But guilt isn’t from God.
God gives conviction when we’re drifting — but He never shames us for slowing down to be with Him.

Your worth is not in your output.
Not your to-do list.
Not your “good ADHD day.”

To be honest…

Even when we do slow down… it doesn’t always feel good, does it?

You finally sit on the couch.
Or close the laptop.
Or step away from the to-do list.

And instead of peace, you get guilt.
A voice in your head whispers:

“You didn’t do enough.”
“You should be using this time better.”
“You’re falling behind.”

This is not laziness — it’s internalized shame.

For years, maybe decades, we’ve been told (or shown) that our value comes from what we produce, finish, or fix.

So when we stop... it feels like we’re failing.

But rest isn’t failure.
Rest is repair.

And here’s the truth:
Your worth was NEVER tied to your productivity.

You’re ALLOWED to pause without earning it.
You’re ALLOWED to rest without guilt.

I want to scream this at you because I know you still don’t believe it but I am telling you — ITS OKAY!

Because your brain needs recovery just as much as your body does.

And if you still feel the guilt when you slow down?

That’s okay too.
Don’t try to fight it — just notice it.
Name it.
Then gently remind yourself:

“This isn’t laziness. This is me listening to my nervous system.”
“This pause is an act of faith — not weakness.”

You're not behind. You're just human.
